21.12.2012 is the end of the world on the Mayan calendar, winter solstice on a normal calendar, and Burning the Clocks day on Brighton’s calendar.
I don’t know how you treat the rumour that 12.21.2012 was the end of the world, but I liked to consider it true in some way.
Despite the fact that I’m an Aries, I don’t have enough courage to go my own way. I tend to follow the social expectations so that everybody would like and accept me. For this reason, I decided the prediction was going to come true to me.
Since the world was going to end anyway, there was nothing to lose to do anything. I went to anywhere the moment I wanted to go spontaneously, did things that I had been longing for, and spent money on things that could make me enjoy without thinking saving for a rainy day, since there’s not much time left. I have to admit that it was a kind of giving-up-on-life thought, but in return, I also got lots of wonderful experiences I hadn’t had imagined before.
The world didn’t end today, but most of my (dying) wishes have been accomplished; so now I can really die with no regrets🙂
The Christmas markets trip was my last wish; the last selfish request from my ego. After such a long time, I finally can accept my fate and the guidance of my higher self without murmur or bargaining.
Apart from being the end-of-the-world legend, 21.12.2012 is also the winter solstice of this year, which had the shortest sunlight time of the year. Hundreds of years ago, pagans used to celebrate this date in various of ways, and that was long before the invention of Christmas. In 1993, people in Brighton somehow decided to celebrate winter solstice by a lantern parade and fireworks, and this event has been held every year since then.
Burning the Clocks event is organized by Same Sky, an art initiative, and is the combination of a parade consisting of lantern holders and Samba dancers, clock burning, and the last but not the least…a big firework show.
Emma once told me about this event, but I didn’t know it was this evening till I went to the town center this afternoon. I decided immediately to stay there and watched the event, in spite of not wearing enough clothes.
The road sides were already crowded with audience by the time of 6:30, and with Samba music starting playing, here came the parade!!
It was not a dazzling or splendour parade. Most people held standard lanterns walking on the street, and only few of them carried special lanterns.
All the lanterns had white background, and the attendees were allowed to decorate the lanterns with black paper kirigami. In general, the attendees were little children with their parents and some students.
One thing couldn’t be missed in a parade is the dance. The parade was in carnival style, so both the music and dance were mostly Samba.
If you had watched a movie of crayon shin-chan talking about Samba, you would know that in that movie, people couldn’t help but shake their body when hearing Samba music. Well…that was my situation tonight. Somehow I lost all my shyness, and moved my body with the music all the way without noticing how others saw me, and I was so happy!
I followed right after the end of the parade to march to the end point of the parade.
The parade ended at the Brighton Wheel, and there was a big clock on the square, which was supposed to be burned down later. Beside the big clock, there were four high stages with carnival dancers performing…kind of like Cirque du Soleil😛
At 8 o’clock, smoke started to rise in front of the big clock, and the pillars aligned beside started to burn after few seconds. The big clock itself started to burn minutes later…so this is the Burning The Clocks!! However…I still don’t know why they burned the clock on winter solstice @@
Of course not…it was firework show time!! The fireworks today were nice, and many of them made us said “Wow~~" I had got some nice pictures too.
The final firework brightened the whole sky and put an perfect end to the event. Although I still don’t get what this event was about, it was a new and nice experience.
Then suddenly I recalled my blog about my CS hosts two days ago, in which I mentioned about my first CS host, who is passionate and lives everyday as if it was his last day, pursuing things he wants without hesitation, and I, on the contrary, was passive and won’t do anything particular even if today was my last day. I realized why I won’t change a thing on my last day now; that’s because I’ve already lived a colorful day everyday, hence I don’t need to make extra effort to live better at all!!
The world is still here after the fireworks had faded, and it’s a new start now. I expect myself to have a whole new life too🙂
